The yellow fever vaccine is no longer mandatory for entry into Senegal or Gambia, except for passengers coming from areas where yellow fever is endemic. However, given the active circulation of the yellow fever virus and the presence of vectors capable of activating transmission, it is strongly recommended that you are up to date with your yellow fever vaccination. In practice, Senegalese or Gambian health authorities may require international vaccination certificates at the border, even for passengers arriving from European countries. According to a recent WHO recommendation, a single yellow fever vaccination is valid for life.
● In Gambia, vaccination against meningococcal meningitis by a quadrivalent vaccine (A, C, Y, W-135) is obligatory.
● No other vaccinations are compulsory, but certain vaccinations are recommended: ensure that you are up to date with your routine vaccinations as well as those related to all geographical areas visited.
● Updating diphtheria-tetanus-polio (DTP) vaccinations is recommended, as well as rubella-mumps-measles (MMR) vaccinations for children; tuberculosis vaccinations are also advisable.
● Other recommended vaccinations: depending on local travel conditions, vaccinations against typhoid fever and viral hepatitis A and B may be recommended.
● It is advisable to be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis.
● Rabies vaccination may also be recommended in certain cases, depending on the conditions and location of your stay. Ask your doctor or an international vaccination centre for advice.
A stay abroad requires travellers to take certain health precautions. The section below provides essential information. However, this information does not exempt travellers from consulting their GP and/or a hospital specialising in travel medicine before departure (and doing so sufficiently in advance of departure to allow for booster vaccinations).
We recommend that all travellers consult the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) website to stay informed, in real time, of the vaccination recommendations and health requirements in force before their trip. https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice
