The Côte d’Azur, also known as the French Riviera, extends over the departments of Alpes-Maritimes and Var, from Toulon to Monaco. Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, the Côte d’Azur is a haven of peace and owes its name to the writer Stéphen Liégeard who, from his villa in Cannes, used to gaze upon the azure colour of the sea. From the rugged coastline and spectacular cliffs of the Alpes-Maritimes to the protected shoreline of the Var via the small rocky coves of the Cap Esterel, the French Riviera offers a multitude of landscapes. It is a real treat to sail through the succession of headlands, peninsulas, bays, islands, picturesque harbours or modern marinas. Thanks to its privileged geographical position as well as weather conditions, the French Riviera is an ideal destination and a true paradise for boaters.
The best seasons for navigation along the Côte d'Azur are:
- Inspring, with the prevailing winds blowing from west to north.
- In summer, with the westerly winds replaced by the breeze regime.
The tide in Mediterranean France is on average 40cm.
