Mini Guide to Var
Hyères
Considered the original French Riviera, the town of Hyères is a picture of beauty; so, if you’re wanting to explore Var during your yacht charter, but away from tourist crowds, it’s the place for you. There’s an enchanting old town to explore; packed with fresh food markets and little boutiques as well as the 12th century Tower of Saint Blaise; all enclosed by breathtaking scenery. If you walk up to Park St. Bernard, you will be immersed in a paradise of greenery, from tropical Mediterranean plants, to fragrant pines, to exotic flowers… in addition, here you will get what may be some of the best views during your yacht charter. You can also sail to the protected island of Port Cros, which is home to magnificent wildlife, including over 114 bird species!
Saint Tropez
Renowned for its glamourous crowds, Saint Tropez is one of the most stylish destinations in the department of Var to rent a yacht. With first-class mooring facilities, attracting the rich and famous from all over the world; more often than not, you’ll spot an ostentatious superyacht or Porsche cruising around the town. If you stop here during your yacht charter, you will definitely spend some time on Quai Jean Jaurès, home to lavish restaurants and bar terraces, and if you want to be seen, head to Sénéquier which is ridden with celebrity faces throughout Summer.
Port Grimaud
The waterside town of Port Grimaud is distinct in Var; known as the ‘Venice of Provence’, the colourful streets wind through the water creating canals, connected with small, Venetian-style footbridges. A yacht charter from here will be truly unique; designed in 1966 by architect Francois Spoerry, the 12km of quays create an enchanting setting. From here, you can sail to neighbouring Cogolin and on to Saint Tropez.
Sailing Conditions in Var
The best times for a yacht charter in Var are in spring and summer, when winds are calm and waters placid. The Mediterranean climate brings long, warm days and with an array of well-equipped stylish marinas, your charter will be easy and stress-free! However, you should stay aware of the mistral wind which can blow strongly in summer, predominantly around Marseille and less in the region between Hyères and St. Tropez.
Best Places to Eat & Drink
The cuisine of Var is exquisite, so a yacht charter is a great opportunity to try out some of the great local restaurants. If you charter in Saint Tropez, don’t miss the Michelin-starred ‘Résidence de la Pinède’; it’s expensive, but well worth it! Or if you’re a seafood lover, and sailing around Porquerolles, head to ‘Restaurant L’Alycastre’ where they serve the freshest catch in a beautiful setting.
Getting to your charter base…
There are various options for reaching your yacht charter base, there are two major international airports around Var: Marseille-Provence and Nice-Cote d’Azur, and a smaller airport near Toulon which takes seasonal flights from Europe and daily flights from Paris.
