Sailing in Saint Malo

Saint Malo’s temperate climate means the summer and early autumn offer the best conditions to charter a yacht. High season occurs in July and August thanks to the warmer and drier climate.

Access to the Port of Saint-Malo and Services

To be precise, there are two ports: the Sablons Port and the Vauban Basin.
Accessing them can be difficult due to large tidal ranges. In fact, two and a half hours before high tide and two and a half hours after, the doors close and yachts can no longer gain access to the ports. So, make sure you contact the harbour master’s office and enquire about tide schedules beforehand.
The Sablons port offers 1200 berths of which about 60 of them are for visitors. Expect to be charged around €25 per night for a 10-metre boat during high season. As for the Vauban basin, it is located at the foot of the ramparts and has 225 berths including 50 for visitors. The price for one night during high season is about €35.
Once ashore, a fuel station, bathroom and toilet facilities and a coin-operated laundry are available to you to ensure your yacht is in prime condition for the duration of your charter holiday.

Highlights of Saint Malo

Saint Malo boasts a rich and flamboyant historic past as can be seen from the ramparts surrounding the town along which the Dukes of Brittany erected the Chateau of Saint-Malo between the XVth and XVIIIth century, cementing their control over the city. These days, the chateau houses the town hall and the town’s history museum. These historical landmarks are highlights of any yacht charter holiday here as they recount the history of Saint-Malo, its traditions and the personalities that have made the city so iconic.

Saint-Malo will be a dream destination for lovers of old buildings as it is full of tremendous churches. Perhaps the most beautiful one is the Cathedral of St. Vincent erected in the 12th century and displaying an architectural style somewhere between the Romanesque and Gothic. The Tomb of Chateaubriand (1768-1848) situated on the île du Grand Be will delight the fans of this famous writer and author of “Memoirs from Beyond the Grave”. A few metres away, still on the Île du Grand Be, lies a Fort built in the 17th to protect the town; but it is only accessible at low tide. These unique attractions are sure to impress during your yacht charter.

The Solidor Tower, near the port of Saint-Pierre, houses the international museum “Long-Cours Cap-hornier”. It is dedicated to cape-horners and traces their expeditions around Cape Horn. A collection of parchments, globes, model boats and nautical instruments are exhibited which are sure to impress passionate sailors and intrigue sailing novices. The place itself is worth a visit just for the view on the Rance estuary. From mid-June to mid-September, guided tours are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10.30 am and on Saturdays at 2.30 pm.

Saint-Malo hosts the start of the famous sailing race called “La Route du Rhum”, and the finish of the transatlantic race Quebec / Saint-Malo. Also, don’t miss the “Saint Malo à la Hune” used boat show, the best way to find a beautiful sailboat at a lower cost.

Finally, Saint-Malo also welcomes many festivals throughout the year such as the music festival “La Route du Rock” in February and August, the comic strip festival Le Quai des Bulles in October, and the festival Folklores du Monde in July that welcomes music and dance groups from the four corners of the globe...
