Why Choose to Sail in Saint Malo

The people of Saint Malo are no strangers to sailors. In fact, the two ports, Sablons Port and the Vauban Basin, are perfectly equipped to cater any needs you may have for your sailboat or your holiday. It is worth noting that the ports are closed two and half hours either side of high tide due to the increase in tidal ranges, but a quick call with the harbour master’s office will ensure you will have no issues in this area.

Sablons Port benefits from over 1200 berths and has generously allocated 60 for sailors on holiday with chartered sailboats. Vauban has a similar number for visitors but is a much smaller marina with 225 berths. There is an abundance of facilities in the marinas including, but not limited to, bathrooms, fuel, and laundry services.

Saint Malo, and indeed the Brittany coast, offers some incredible and dramatic views of the carves landscape while you sail along the lively tides. Like most locations in France, July and August is the busiest time of year for sailboat rentals but sailing in early summer and early autumn means you can avail of the sunny spells whilst evading the crowds. If you feel the Atlantic may be a bit of a challenge for your sailing ability, why not include a skipper who can ensure you have the sailing holiday of a lifetime in Saint Malo?

Saint Malo’s Best Bits

Saint Malo Walls

Although you probably do not need these defensive measures today to protect your sailboat, history has displayed the need for adequate protection of old ports. Today, the walls of Saint Malo offer an imposing glimpse into the past, whether you are viewing them from sea or walking along the 2km pathway. The impressive structures are one of the most iconic things about Saint Malo and render the town a pivotal location in sailing history.

Eventail Beach

This pretty beach is an ideal getaway haven as it is less crowded than other beaches in Saint Malo. What’s more, there are plenty of places to grab an ice-cream or beer while you bask in the sunshine or take a dip in the Atlantic. There are some more historical sites observable from your deck chair, with Fort National looming in the distance. It is the perfect place to visit to get a break from the sailboat or to top up your tan.

The Impressive Aquarium

If you are not fortunate enough to see any marine life from your chartered sailboat then this could be the next best thing. A brief detour inland from the coast of Saint Malo and the diverse and colourful array of aquatic species will leave you speechless. An impressive structure housing some menacing sharks is possibly the highlight of the visit, but every corner has something quirky and memorable to see. Families visiting Sant Malo will adore this attraction.
