The Kornati archipelago is located west of the city of Šibenik, in the northern region of Croatia’s Dalmatian coastline. Made up of 140 islands, scattered across an area 35km long and 14km wide, the archipelago is a haven of natural beauty, with little/no sign of human inhabitation. With dozens of safe bays to drop anchor and ideal waters for swimming and snorkeling, it’s a little pocket of paradise in the Adriatic, that is well worth visiting during your sailboat charter. You should keep in mind that this is an area of incredible biodiversity and there is even a 500m exclusion zone that has been created, with the aim of encouraging the development of ecosystems. A colony of dolphins has since emerged, so you may be one of the lucky few to get a sighting!
A sailboat charter from Šibenik will give you the opportunity to discover many parts of Croatian culture; including the sumptuous, flavoursome cuisine. Based around many traditional Mediterranean ingredients, punctuated with a lot of freshly-caught seafood, the food of Šibenik will not disappoint. Here are a few must-try dishes for your charter:
Crni rizot: A traditional, black risotto dish with squid, mussels and clams
Pasticada: One of the most popular dishes of the Dalmatian coast is a beef fillet which in marinated in wine vinegar and red wine for days, then served with gnocchi.
Brudet: A typical dish of the Croatian coastline, it’ll be easy to find an authentic version of this fragrant fish stew if you charter in Šibenik.
Located within a short distance of the islands of Hvar, Vis, Solta and Brač, the city of Šibenik is a great place to begin your sailboat charter. Your base is located at Marina Mandalina, just south of the city, and can accommodate boats of up to 140 meters in length. With 429 sea berths, the marina is of good size and has all the facilities you might need before embarking on your cruise, and this marina is known to be one of the safest ports in the bay of Šibenik due to its location, which is naturally protected from all types of winds.
Marina Mandalina is also home to specialist shops such as a yacht chandlery and various services if you need to fix something onboard. If you charter from Šibenik in high season, front office services are open from 7am to 10pm and from 8am to 9pm in the mid-season. Just a short distance from the marina lies two beaches, a windsurfing school, tennis courts, and the local bus station.
A sailboat charter in the Adriatic will be a dream.
