Why Charter a Sailboat in Nome

Experience the Gold Rush

In 1898, this isolated Alaskan town was put on the map thanks to the thrilling discovery of gold just off the coast of the Bering Sea. An influx of interest in Nome caused an explosion in population at the time, although this has now decreased significantly. Of course, gold is not as sought-after as it was back then, but the importance of this event is still evident in the town today thanks to the establishment of tourist landmarks concerning the old industry. Those who charter a sailboat in Nome should visit the world’s largest gold pan (spanning 20ft in diameter), explore the gold dredges scattered around the town, and even have a stab yourself at the traditional gold panning process!

The Dramatic Alaskan Wilderness

Fewer coastlines are as impressive as that found in Nome, and what better way to gain a unique perspective of this cinematic landscape than from your own chartered sailboat? From the sea, enjoy uninterrupted views of the coast, whether it is the tall coniferous forestry or the sweeping mountain ranges with white caps. In the summertime, flora bursting with colour will adorn the grey countryside, making for picturesque countryside. Keep an eye out for the intriguing wildlife, including foxes, bears, wolves, and beavers. If you choose to sail in the winter, you may even be fortunate enough to witness one of the natural wonders of the world – the Aurora Borealis – which occur typically between November and March. Nothing comes close to the serenity of this town, which puts everything into perspective and will stay with you long after you leave.

Unique Swimming

Initially, swimming may not be the first thing to come to mind when you think of Nome and the Bering Sea, but locals will attest to the exhilarating feeling of a swim against the stunning backdrop of the Alaskan landscape. Why not jump in from the sailboat for a refreshing dip, followed by a revitalising coffee on the shoreline? Something even more unique is the Midnight Sun Festival Polar Bear Swim, something that will prove to be a highlight of your charter holiday.

Bering Land Bridge National Preserve

Alaska and Russia were once connected via a remarkable land bridge, the remains of which can be seen today. This unique landscape offers a glimpse into Earth’s geological history, with a visitor centre on hand to explain the intricacies associated with the geographical marvel. This location is also popular for birdwatching. Make sure you take envious photos of this stunning scenery which you can enjoy with a glass of wine once you return to your sailboat in the evening.

Flavoursome Food

This small town does not do small flavours, with a range of delectable restaurants to choose from to satisfy your appetite. With Italian, Asian and American cuisines to try, you do not have far to walk from your sailboat to find delicious meals. Of course, being a seaside town, the use of fresh and local produce is some of the region’s specialties, with the bars and taverns being the perfect place to unwind after a day of sailing.

How to get to Nome

Nome may seem like a remote location in Alaska due to there being no direct road links to the town, but there are still plenty of options to reach your chartered sailboat destination. With three flights daily, Alaska Airlines serves routes between Nome and Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (one of the larger international airports in Alaska which has major international routes). The flight is followed by a 1.4 miles journey to the town. If you want to try something adventurous, try getting a transfer by a snowmobile or dogsled trail – there’s something you don’t see every day!
