Don't miss it in Lake Champlain

Sailing in Lake Champlain

When you choose to charter a sailboat in Lake Champlain, you benefit from exquisite sailing conditions that are quite different than sailing at sea. The lack of tides in this location means you can focus more on the weather’s influence on your sailing. Summer temperatures average in the mid-20s, so you can take advantage of the weather to top up your tan. Lake Champlain often sees winds coming from a westerly direction, but these can be subject to change. In fact, wind and weather conditions are the primary influences on your sailing experience. Nevertheless, sailing is a hugely popular activity here and it will be easy to see why when you observe the remarkable countryside surrounding this tranquil lake.

Where Should I Visit?

Lake Champlain is home to a host of activities, stunning nature trails and intriguing historical landmarks. Here are just a sample of the things to see and do when you charter a sailboat here:

Essex Town

Possibly one of the most picturesque towns in North America, Essex has a distinct designation as a town on the National Register of Historic Places. Do not be deceived by its relatively small size – there is no shortage of things to do and see here. A true community spirit is palpable in this quaint town which is brimming with amazing dining locations using the fresh and local produce from the farmlands surrounding it. Even better – when you charter a sailboat in Lake Champlain, you have prime access to Champlain Area Trails, a range of unique walkways and hikes through the wilderness of Adirondack Park. Here, you can see the range of wildlife and shrubbery that make Lake Champlain and its surrounding areas so beautiful.

Crown Point State Historic Site

Lake Champlain’s pivotal role in many historical conflicts in North America have resulted in ruins of impressive fort structures in the countryside around it. Docking your sailboat for the day will give you an opportunity to delve into the past and discover the secrets behind colonial wars and the Revolutionary War. Crown Point State Historic Site is just one of these great locations, with a substantial museum detailing the story behind the fort being both an educational centre and a source of entertainment.

Swap your Sailboat

A prime location for sailing means Lake Champlain is also perfectly suited for other watersport activities for all ages. Trade your chartered sailboat for a paddleboard or a kayak, while still soaking in the incredible views from the shoreline. Head ashore for some sunbathing on the beach or try your hand at catching some fish. Then, head back on your sailboat to visit the islands located throughout the lake. Here, serenity and impressive views will prove to be the highlight of your charter holiday for sure.

Dining with a View

Such a pretty location ensures that many of the succulent restaurants also offer stellar views of the lake and landscape in which they are located. Lake Champlain’s best views arguably are seen with a table in Splash at the Boathouse, where stunning sunset vistas are observed from a floating dock. A global menu is on offer in The Daily Planet, with dishes stemming from the four corners of the world. Or why not stay close to your sailboat with dinner at Ruthcliffe Lodge and Restaurant, which serves the freshest produce right on the lake shore?
