The Perfect Conditions for a Sailing Expedition

La Paz has a dry season and a wet season, so you will want to visit during the dry months – between November and May. The average temperature is moderate, with highs between 23°C and 29°C. This weather makes it easy to take a dip in the sea, lounge in the sun, or try your hand at one of the many water sports available to you during your sailboat charter in La Paz. Wind speeds are the highest during the dry season, around 18 kilometres per hour during these months.

Getting there

There are many options to get to La Paz, but we recommend flying into the La Paz International Airport, which rests just 12 kilometres from the city centre, making it easy for you to explore the city before heading to your departure base. A taxi or Uber will get you to the city centre in around 15 minutes, while a bus or shuttle from the airport will take anywhere from 25-35 minutes; however, it will be significantly cheaper. Depending on your boat rental package, you may have the option for transport from the airport to your departure base included or at a small supplementary fee, so be sure to check in with your GlobeSailor advisor.

Sights to see

Museo de la Ballena – Museum of Whales

One stop not to miss before departing on your sailboat charter in La Paz is the Museum of Whales. Nature lovers are sure to enjoy this, as this museum gives an in-depth look into the natural world of the whale species native to and inhabiting the Sea of Cortez (otherwise known as the Gulf of California). On top of this, the entry fee into the museum includes a guided tour in either English or Spanish, so you have the option to learn even more about these magnificent creatures from an expert or wander through and discover the world of whales at your own pace.

The famous Promenade Malecón

Beautiful views, perfect weather, and the endless seaside restaurants and shops... What could be better? Take the time to pay a visit to the Promenade Malecón, the area most famous in La Paz, to stroll comfortably along the coast and take in the fresh sea air. Here, you will find a multitude of delicious food in cafés and restaurants, as well as plenty of bars, street vendors, and shops producing local goods and crafts. Watch the sunset over the water as you eat a classic fish taco or taste some chocolate clams and enjoy the heavenly setting surrounding you.

Balandra beach

Along the coastline, you will also find extensive flats of beautiful, pristine beaches, such as possibly the most sought-after beach in Mexico, Balandra beach. Here, you can find the famous mushroom rock formation, known as "El Hongo,” one of the reasons this beach is so well-known. This symbol of La Paz is so grand it weighs a whopping 18 tons and is balanced precariously atop a thin base, giving it the appearance of a mushroom. More than once the massive rock has fallen from the base due to natural storms, but the La Paz government has restored it each time. Be sure to keep an eye out for it when you charter a sailboat in La Paz! Another reason locals and tourists alike love Balandra beach is undoubtedly the fine, white sand stretching for miles and the sheltered bay that keeps the turquoise sea calm and relaxed at the shore. This is the perfect place to take a stroll, sunbathe, or even try out stand up paddle boarding in the calm water.

Sculptures galore!

Throughout La Paz, you will have the opportunity to discover several unique and interesting sculptures if you choose to do so. They are scattered throughout the city in various places, set up for visitors to discover naturally; however, if you are particularly interested in these pieces of art, then go on a sculpture hunt! Plan out an itinerary following a route to view sculptures and take a moment to learn a little about each along the way. If you do not want to take the time to plan your own route, stick to discovering the sculptures and artwork along the Malecón, which will surely leave you in awe of the contributions created to reflect La Paz and its ecological roots. The Old Man and the Sea sculpture along with The Dove of Peace are two of the most prominent along the path, so definitely check these out if you are short on time before departing on your sailboat rental.
