Geography of Ibiza

At 571 km², Ibiza is the largest Balearic Island, yet it is still compact. The natural beauty of this island is incomparable. With 57 beaches along picturesque valleys and hills, Ibiza is a natural wonder. There are two mountain ranges on the island covered in lush green woodland which is why the Greeks bestowed the name “The Pituses” to the Balearic Islands in reference to the abundance of pines. While exploring the island, you will notice the soil’s deep orange/ red color soil. It is a byproduct of the high iron content. There is also an abundance of cactus on the island along with juniper trees, rock rose, and almond blossoms. Despite the plentiful flora on Ibiza, there is no fresh running water. The island’s sole river is practically dry, so the water is welled from deep underground. The natural wonders on the island are endless and the Can Marc Caves in the north east of Ibiza is a great example. This expansive cave system is 13 meters above sea level and over 100,000 years old, formed by telluric currents. Filled with stalagmites, one in the shape of a small buddha, the cave system was once used by smugglers to hide goods. Now with lighting and paths for easy access, this cave is a necessary stop during your sailboat charter in Ibiza. In the cave there is a man-made waterfall in the place of the original waterfall that once flowed there. There is a portion of the caves that are completely natural. There is a large cavern where a pool of water lies on stone. The fluorescence in the water makes it appear to glow when photographed, however it looks solid to the naked eye. Experience tranquility while exploring the natural attractions of Ibiza.

Es Vedrá

Just south of Ibiza is uninhabited the island Es Vedrá. This nature reserve was only inhabited once in 1855 by Francisco Paulau y Quer. He was banished to Ibiza and then lived on the island for a short period writing some of his best works here. Today, there are only non-human inhabitants that reside on the island the Ibizan wall lizard and a colony of Eleanora’s falcon’s which are an endangered bird of prey. At 400 meters high, Es Vedrá is the subject of many tall tales, legends and myths around the world. Beginning with Homer’s Odyssey, Es Vedrá was the home of the nymphs and sirens that tried to lure Ulysses from his ship. One of the biggest myths about the island is that it is the third most magnetic point in the world, after Bermuda and the North Pole. During your sailboat charter in Ibiza, sail pass the island with no worries because the island consists predominately of Mesozoic limestone, proving this myth to be false. The island is also the setting for one of Ibiza’s most famous tales, Es Gegant des Vedrá (The Giant of Es Vedrá). This story is about two brother who must venture to the island to save their father of an incurable disease with rock samphire off the island. They had to face the giant who lived on the island in one of the caves. With the help of sea urchins, they overpowered the giant and retrieved the samphire. On your sailboat charter in Ibiza, the legend you will discover is that Es Vedrá is the tip of the sunken civilization of Atlantis. Explore and uncover the truth for yourself!
