Must-see in La Rochelle

La Rochelle is a walled city featuring many fortifications, of which the most famous are the three medieval towers (Tour de la Lanterne, Tour de la Chaîne and Tour Saint-Nicolas) at the entrance of the old port. The archways around the centre of town, built over 400 years ago, give this beautiful city a particular charm.
Aside from the richness of its architecture, La Rochelle boasts many parks where it is very pleasant to stroll after a day at sea. For example, the 40-hectare Charruyer Park, in an English garden style, offers winding paths beneath shady trees to promenade along. For marine animal lovers, go to the aquarium in Les Minimes Marina showing about 10 000 species in 65 large aquariums. Also, make sure to visit the Maritime Museum, a museum which is afloat in the old port and is comprised of eight beautiful ships. Exhibits are housed on three of the eight ships and can therefore be boarded; the other five are just on display.

La Rochelle is a vibrant and dynamic city and a hub for numerous festivals. The two most important ones are unquestionably ‘Le Grand Pavois’, the largest international in-water boat show, and ‘Les Francofolies’, an unmissable music festival in July featuring all the biggest names of the artistic French scene.
