MAIN AREAS FOR SAILING IN GREECE

If you have doubts about the area where to book your cruise trip in the Greek islands, you can view a brief summary that details the main sailing destinations in Greece below:

The Sporades: including Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos

If you are looking for the full catamaran cruise experience: tranquillity, secluded coves, sailing, natural areas and traditional gastronomy, these islands are an excellent example of natural sailing destinations that many consider a true paradise.

This area is famous for its nature reserves full of protected species that you can observe on tours through the natural parks. The favourable sailing conditions ensure a fantastic vacation for passengers as they cruise on the boat through the calm turquoise sea.

Scheduled tours to places such as Skopelos Island, Skiathos Island or the National Marine Reserve are on the agenda for your group in the Sporades itinerary. Our skipper and crew will ensure your boat arrives on each island with enough time to complete whatever interesting tour is available.

Crete and the southern part of the Aegean Sea

This route is fascinating and an experience you will undoubtedly enjoy. Take pleasure in your few days of sailing through this earthly paradise, where its architectural variety will also enchant you.

Crete is the fifth largest Mediterranean island and is home to the oldest civilization in Europe (the Minoans), blooming around 2700 B.C. To learn about the Minoans, you can view bronze-age archaeological sites throughout the island and pay a visit to the phenomenal archaeological museum in the capital city, Heraklion.

These Minoan palaces perfectly blend modern-day and ancient Greece. Many centuries later, Venetians made their own lasting contributions to Cretan cities, building harbours, walls and fortresses which tower high in today's Heraklion, Chania and Rethymno. Why not pay a visit to Crete and tour all the beautiful sites? View the walls and harbours and decide for yourself how much of an impact Venice and Italy had on the region.

Crete is surrounded by smaller islands where you will be mesmerised by the picturesque Venetian Canea, the unique and hidden Sitia, the archaeological islet of Spinalonga, and the historical Rethymnon and if you are a diving lover, you can not miss the opportunity to dive in Elafonisi.

Your itinerary will also allow you time to taste the flavours of traditional Greek gastronomy and Mediterranean drinks such as Fasolada soup, Gyros grilled meat, Feta cheese or Ouzo, and Metaxa are world-famous Greek drinks. After tasting the local cuisine, you'll be rushing to leave some excellent reviews!

The Cyclades: from the famous Mykonos and Santorini to Amorgos and Phlegandros.

The Cyclades are the most visited of the Greek islands. With their natural coves, picturesque harbours and lively nights, it's no surprise if your group wishes to spend many hours in the area!

Mykonos is a popular tourist destination in Greece and a classic stop for most trips to this archipelago, known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and picturesque white-washed buildings. It is located in the Cyclades islands and is a popular spot for party-goers and those looking for a more relaxed vacation. Spend your nights dancing in Mykonos at one of its wide range of venues, from beach clubs and bars to clubs and music venues, meaning whatever your group is looking for, there is an option that best suits you!

No sailing trip to Greece would be complete without making a stop in Santorini. Santorini has some fantastic and unique adventures that will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of your catamaran cruise. Some of our top picks:

  • The volcano of Santorini offers a unique opportunity to sail to the top of a volcano, visit the hot springs, and witness the breathtaking views from the crater.
  • The island of Nea Kameni, the volcanic island in the caldera's centre, offers a great opportunity to swim and snorkel in the warm seas.
  • The island of Thirassia is the quieter and more traditional sister island of Santorini.
  • The Red Beach and the White Beach, two of the most famous beaches on the island, are known for their red and white volcanic sands, respectively.

There are several sailing routes from the central port in the Cyclades in Mykonos or Paros. From here, you can set a course for more remote islands of the Cyclades, such as Amorgos and Phlegandros. A private cabin or cruise offers passengers the luxury of exclusivity. On a yacht charter, you can discover experiences that cannot be done without a boat. The length of the Grecian coastline has many beautiful lagoons and coves waiting to be found. A lagoon is typically located in the more secluded parts of the islands and offers a more peaceful atmosphere for you to enjoy.

Special attention should be paid to the Meltemi wind that usually blows strongly in summer. Your skipper will check the weather every day for a complete update.

Relaxing on a Santorini terrace, sipping a coffee or tasting refreshing Mediterranean drinks will put the finishing touch to your vacation days.

Dodecanese Zone: Rhodes, Kos, and Kastelorizo

If your cabin cruise is in northern Greece, booking a flight or ferry to take you to the departure port of your gulet, catamaran or sailboat can be a good way to get there quickly and efficiently.

These Greek islands are ideal for sailors, as the sea is less crowded and calm. If you're keen on improving your sailing education, you can approach the skipper to learn how to crew the ship when he is available. By the end of the week, you'll be full of knowledge about how to crew a yacht!

The weather offers you different scenarios to enjoy different sailing conditions each day with a complete itinerary for the week.

Kos and Rhodes are the liveliest islands with bars where you can discover the most authentic gastronomic offers.  Greece is a great place to go out as it offers food and drinks at a very reasonable price. There are hours of entertainment available for you here to discover!

Kos:

  • Some popular spots include Bar Street, where you can find a variety of bars and clubs, and the Kos Marina, where you can find a more upscale and relaxed atmosphere.
  • The town also offers a variety of beach bars and clubs, such as Banana Beach Bar, known for its lively parties and DJ events.
  • Also, you can find a variety of traditional Greek taverns and restaurants, where you can enjoy the local cuisine and live music.
  •
Rhodes:
  • Rhodes is known for its medieval architecture and lively nightlife. Some popular spots include the Old Town, home to several bars and clubs, and the Rhodes Marina, which offers a more upscale atmosphere.
  • Faliraki is a popular tourist spot known for its lively bars, clubs and beach parties.
  • Trianta is also known for its bars and clubs, and it's a quieter and more relaxed spot.

It's worth noting that many of the nightlife spots in Kos and Rhodes can get quite crowded, especially during peak season, and it's best to book tables in advance!

After recovering from the lively Greek nights, you can wake up to the classic scenery of white houses over the blue sea and relax while watching the sunrise stretch over the length of the coast from your private cabins.

Visiting the island of Tilos is another must. The mountainous islet is home to over 400 species of flora and fauna. Tilos is considered an ecological park protected by international treaties. In ancient Greece, the island was renowned for its herbs!

The Ionian Sea: Corfu, Zante Kefalonia and Lefkada

These waters are ideal for anchoring. You will enjoy each port departure of its quiet bays, unexpected taverns and the range of colours that draw their landscapes.

Corfu is the second largest of the Ionian islands. The coastline will amaze you the second you spot it from your cabin, and it has a wild beach called Issos that is a must-see.

Discover picturesque seaside villages, resorts and wild natural landscapes, as well as villages and tiny verdant islets. Some islets are even lined with luxurious resorts. The natural beauty and influence of Venice make it a great place for exploration. It's one of the best places to visit in Greece, with destination people from around the world visiting its many attractions. Corfu Town is the capital of Corfu and a brilliant base for exploring the island.

It is a Venetian town, with buildings similar to those in Italy and an English remains in the arcade of the old French quarter. The town gives visitors castles, hills and monasteries, and quaint little islets offshore. The Corfu port was once part of the Venetian Empire, and its influence can be seen in the architecture, which is why many refer to it as a miniature Venice. The rich history of this island also extends to Ancient Greek times when Kerkyra was its name, and it has left influences marks from many different empires throughout time. Corfu Town is well known for its picturesque seas, which are very popular among tourists; it’s no wonder why so many people flock here each year looking for an unforgettable experience!

Taking a break from the Sea

If you start to miss land after sailing in the Cyclades, there is nothing easier than spending a day in a unique city like Athens. Lovers of Greek mythology will be able to fully immerse themselves in the fascinating ruins and history. Take a trip towards the Acropolis and feel how they lived thousands of years ago in ancient Greece. History lovers will certainly not be bored here! Athens is also great for an active vacation, so bring comfortable walking shoes! Yachts and catamarans can reach the city easily because there is a marina in the Athens town of Alimos! The marina is located next to stores where you can do some shopping at a reasonable price. In this town, you can also find beaches and interesting restaurants. You can taste Greek cuisine's dishes and nourish yourself before the tour. Forget Rome, Paris or Venice! Athens is a cultural hotspot that is an unmissable visit for you this year.

Weather in Greece

Sail aboard a gulet, catamaran or sailing yacht in your private cabin with all services included around the Greek islands. The Greek coasts enjoy mild temperatures in winter, but rain and wind are recurrent. However, snow is not to be expected in Greece or on cruises in most cases. In the summer months of July, August and September, on the other hand, the weather is usually very dry and hot, and summer storms are also common.

The islands located to the east of the Aegean Sea tend to have a more humid climate than the islands of the central Aegean.

In Santorini, a favourite of travellers and sailors, the average summer temperature usually reaches 34 degrees Celsius, with water temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius. During autumn or spring, the weather is mild and pleasant, and the ports are not as crowded, thus ensuring an excellent cruising experience.

Sailing Conditions in the Mediterranean

For sailing in the Greek islands, it is essential to have up-to-date wind information available. Even if you are an experienced sailor, caution should be exercised in this area. You must be prepared for strong and constant winds in July and August.
