Three Reasons to Charter a Catamaran in Spain

1. Glorious Beaches

Spain is famous for its golden beaches, and they are not in short supply. With costa upon costa to explore, a catamaran charter from any base will never leave you far from glistening sands. If you rent from Empuriabrava, Roses or any other bases in the rugged, enchanting Costa Brava, drop anchor at Tamariu, and head to Horseshoe Bay, where you will be met with soft sand and translucent turquoise waters! Or if you’re sailing in the north-west in Galicia, charter from the base in Vigo and navigate to the Cíes Islands where white-sand, pristine beaches are limited to only a certain number of visitors per day, and a ban on motor-vehicles keeps the islands clean and quiet.

2. Mediterranean Climate

If you want to rent a boat in Spain, your best bet would be to go between May and October for the best sailing conditions. The country’s Mediterranean heat and sunshine makes it a glorious time for a catamaran charter, and combined with the mild winds which range between 5-15 knots, the conditions could not be more ideal for a smooth navigation.

3. Spanish Culture

We all know Spain for its flamenco, bullfighting, siestas and fiestas, but there is so much more to explore, and a catamaran charter is the perfect opportunity. With a culture rich in art, whether sailing in Catalonia, Galicia or Gibraltar, you will find something to satisfy a creative spirit. If you want to be based in a unique, iconic, artistic city… Barcelona is the one for you! Home to Gaudi’s famous, unfinished church, La Sagrada Família and the mosaic-cloaked Parc Güell, it’s long been a hub for artists, as well as tourists wanting to witness its striking beauty and distinct character. There are various galleries in the city including ‘Fundació Antoni Tápies’, celebrating the works of local Catalan painter Tápies exhibited in a fascinating modernista building. So, if your catamaran charter adventure starts from Barcelona, allow yourself at least 24 hours to explore the wonders the city has to offer before embarking on your trip.

Balearic Beauty

Spain’s Balearic Islands are diverse, and each has a unique charm, but the one thing they all have in common is their breathtaking beauty and sparkling, topaz waters. Whilst Ibiza is famed for its wild parties and A-list crowd, there are many forgotten villages such as Dalt Vila in the mountains, where you can grasp what life on the island might have been like before Spain’s mass tourism! The largest island, Majorca is a great place to start your catamaran charter, with cities such as Palma offering endless activities, from the gothic cathedral to cycling through pine forests, there’s something for everyone. Menorca and Formentera, however are more understated and less geared towards tourism, therefore sailing here is quieter. If you rent a catamaran from either of these islands, it will be a peaceful adventure on and around enchanting nature; hidden coves, pine forests, and pretty beaches.

Catalan Cooking

An autonomous state within Spain, Catalonia is known for its creative spirit. With Barcelona at its heart, art and architecture are at the forefront, but culinary arts mustn’t be forgotten! With its flavours and dishes distinct from other Spanish cuisine, the cooking is reason enough to opt for a catamaran charter in Catalonia. Try specialties such as ‘Escalivada’ (grilled Mediterranean vegetables served with anchovies or tuna), or ‘Suquet de Peix’ (fish stew), which derives from the days when fishermen used to use up unsold catch, by making it all into a stew. Head to Barcelona Street Market and sample the different flavours of authentic Catalan cuisine…
