Status of navigation in Montenegro

Montenegro, otherwise called the Pearl of the Mediterranean, is an excellent navigation area either for sailing regattas or for boaters wishing to cruise in Montenegro. The summer remains the best season to navigate in Montenegro. With temperatures approaching 30 degrees, anchorages in an exquisite, turquoise sparkling sea, Montenegro offers amazing cruises between Kotor and Bar.

The winds are generally moderate thanks to the VHF with, rarely, any strong gusts. However, it is always important to check the weather before and during your cruise in Montenegro thanks to the VHF as well as to daily weather information shown in the ports of Montenegro.

There are numerous small harbours in the gulf of Kotor and on the Adriatic coast. They offer boaters who are stopping over or departing boats rental the possibility to refuel, to disembark, and to fill up on water.

The boat rental bases are located along the montenegrin coast. However, the main bases of departure for a cruise in Montenegro are generally in Kotor. Catamaran and sailing boat rental are very popular in Montenegro. However, it is also possible to rent motor boats or luxury yachts.

IMPORTANT: Montenegro's currency is Euro. There are two international airports in Montenegro – Tivat and Podgorica. Visitors can also fly to Dubrovnik, Croatia and arrange transfer to your particular charter base in Montenegro. Visitors from Italy can also travel by ferryboat from Bari to Bar or Ancona to Bar.

Sailing Routes in Montenegro

Montenegro's coast is ideal for a 7 day cruise or two weeks if you decide to start your sailing trip here and then continue to Croatia and visit both countries.

Starting from Bar heading north you can enjoy the crystal clear waters of Maljevik cove or Queen’s beach. In the vicinity of Budva you will find St. Stefan’s island, St. Nicola’s island and two coves suitable for anchorage and swimming – Jaz and Trsteno. Traste bay is ideal if you don’t want to spend the night in the marina and you can enjoy a charming little fishing village called Bigova.

On your way to Herceg Novi you can drop anchor in coves such as Zanjic, Mirista or Dobrec overlooking the island of Mamula with its 19th century fortification. Sailing towards the spectacular Boka Kotorska Bay you musn't miss visiting the little island called Our Lady of the Rock with its beautiful church and little baroque town Perast. Boka Kotorska bay is one of the most beautiful bays in the world. It consists of four connected straits surrounded by high cliffs. Around Boka Kotorska bay there are several little towns (Perast, Prcanj, Risan) among them is Kotor, city of World Cultural Heritage.
